Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is a powerful instrument that allows one to image the sample surface at the atomic level. As the first generation of scanning probe microscopy (SPM), STM paves the way for the study of nano-science and nano-materials.
Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) In 1987 - only one year after the Nobel Prize was awarded to Gerd Binnig and Heinrich Rohrer - our legendary STM 1 was created. Since those early times of STM we have continuously advanced our SPM product in order to support technology leaders and fore-front SPM researchers as well as application and material science
Each member of this family uses a different type of interaction or force between the probing tip and the sample. The most widely implemented ones are the STM and the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). Invented in 1981 the STM was the first of many scanning probe microscopes (SPM). In 1986 the inventors Gert Binnig and Heinrich Rohrer from the IBM Research Laboratory in Riischlikon (Switzerland), were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. The LT SPM is an ultra-stable platform offering a large range of operation modes including STM, QPlus AFM, STS, IETS, force spectroscopy, optical experiments and atom manipulation. Technology Finder Through the unification of the SPM mechanics into one STM/AFM unit, the SPM Aarhus 150 can easily be upgraded to AFM by using the KolibriSensor™.

Manufactures scanning probe microscopes "Pan Scan" accessories for research. Quantitative SPM & STM solutions for UHV, liquid, and controlled environment. In a Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) experiment, conductive sample surfaces are probed with a sharp metallic tip in order to generate microscopic images of the surfaces down to atomic dimensions. The metal tip is scanned across the surface line by line while simultaneously recording the so called tunneling current between the electronically biased tip and the surface.

STM can form an image of individual atoms on a metal, semiconductor or other conductive sample surface by scanning the tip of a needle over the surface at a height of only a few atomic diameters, so that tunnel current occurs between the tip and the sample.
